Ingredients
Scale
Pizza Dough & Crust
- 1 pound prepared fresh pizza dough
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (divided; 1 tablespoon to brush the dough and 1 tablespoon to cook the ground beef)
Beef Topping
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 cup small diced yellow onion (divided; ¾ cup for beef mixture and ¼ cup for toppings)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
Cheese & Toppings
- 2½ cups shredded yellow American cheese (from an 8-ounce piece sliced at the deli counter)
- 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
- ⅓ cup hamburger sliced dill pickles (patted dry)
- ⅓ cup bottled Thousand Island dressing
- 2 teaspoons sesame seeds
Instructions
- Preheat oven and prepare pan: Preheat your oven to 425°F. Lightly spray a large 15 to 16-inch round pizza pan with nonstick spray and set it aside for later use.
- Roll out pizza dough: On a clean work surface, carefully roll or stretch out your fresh pizza dough to 14 inches in diameter. Place the dough onto the prepared pizza pan. Using a fork, poke holes all over the surface of the dough, leaving about a half-inch border around the edges. These holes prevent bubbles during baking.
- Brush dough and par-bake: Brush the entire surface of the pizza dough with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Bake the dough without toppings for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool while you prepare the toppings.
- Cook the beef mixture: Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the lean ground beef, ¾ cup diced yellow onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Cook and brown the beef for 5 to 6 minutes until no pink remains.
- Drain excess grease: Using a slotted spoon, transfer the cooked ground beef to a paper towel-lined plate to drain off excess grease.
- Assemble the pizza base: Evenly spread the drained ground beef mixture over the par-baked pizza dough, leaving about a 1-inch border around the edge for the crust.
- Add cheese topping: Sprinkle the shredded American cheese evenly over the ground beef layer.
- Bake to melt cheese and finish crust: Return the pizza to the oven and bake for 7 to 11 minutes until the crust is golden and the cheese has melted. Remove from oven and place on a large cutting board.
- Add fresh toppings: Scatter the shredded iceberg lettuce across the melted cheese, followed by the remaining ¼ cup diced yellow onion.
- Garnish pizza: Arrange the dill pickle slices randomly over the pizza, drizzle the Thousand Island dressing decoratively across the top, and sprinkle with sesame seeds for the final touch.
- Slice and serve: Use a pizza cutter to cut the pizza into eight slices by slicing in half, then quarters, and then halving each quarter. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Par-baking the crust ensures it stays crisp and doesn’t get soggy from the toppings.
- Poking holes in the dough before baking helps prevent bubbles.
- Patting the pickles dry prevents excess moisture from making the pizza soggy.
- You can substitute Thousand Island dressing with a homemade burger sauce if desired.
- Use freshly sliced American cheese from the deli counter for the best melty texture and authentic flavor.
