It’s a cozy and naturally sweetened drink ideal for cleansing and soothing the senses.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 quarts cold water
  • 12 ounces fresh cranberries, rinsed
  • 1/2 cup turbinado sugar (or sweetener of choice)
  • 2 medium oranges, juiced (keep the rind to add to the simmering tea)
  • 1 large lime, juiced (keep the rind to add to the simmering tea)

Spices and Herbs

  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 4 sprigs mint

Garnish (Optional)

  • Slice of orange
  • Cinnamon stick
  • Slice of ginger

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a large saucepan over medium heat, pour in the cold water, add fresh cranberries, turbinado sugar, freshly squeezed orange juice, and lime juice.
  2. Prepare Spice Bag: Place whole cloves, mint sprigs, orange rind, and lime rind into a square of cheesecloth. Tie it securely with butcher twine to create a spice bag, then submerge it in the cranberry mixture.
  3. Bring to Boil: Heat the mixture until it reaches a rolling boil, which should take about 15 minutes. Cranberries will begin popping.
  4. Simmer: Lower the heat to a gentle simmer and continue cooking for approximately 30 minutes to infuse flavors fully.
  5. Remove Spice Bag: Carefully take out the cheesecloth bag containing citrus and spices, discarding afterward.
  6. Strain Mixture: Remove cinnamon sticks and strain the cranberry liquid through a fine sieve to ensure a smooth tea.
  7. Adjust Sweetness: Taste and add additional sweetener if desired, customizing it to your family’s preference.
  8. Optional Uses: Reserve the cranberry mixture for use in breads, muffins, or smoothies as a flavorful additive.
  9. Serve Warm: Pour the tea into cups, garnishing with a slice of orange, a cinnamon stick, or a slice of ginger for added aroma and visual appeal.
  10. Store Properly: Keep any leftover tea in a plastic container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  11. Reheat to Enjoy: When ready, reheat a cup of the tea to enjoy a comforting hot beverage.

Notes

  • Use turbinado sugar or an alternative sweetener such as honey or agave for different flavor profiles.
  • The cheesecloth spice bag makes removal easy and keeps spices from dispersing in the tea.
  • Fresh citrus rind adds a vibrant zest without bitterness when simmered gently.
  • This tea can also be served chilled as a refreshing cold beverage in warmer months.
  • Adjust the amount of sugar to make it more or less sweet depending on dietary needs.
  • The leftover strained cranberries can be used for jams or added to desserts to reduce waste.
